249 BC - General Facts:
  • A year of the pre-Julian Roman calendar.
  • Was known at the time as the Year of the Consulship of Pulcher and Pullus.
  • The 249 BC label for this year comes from when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years.
Battle of Drepana:
  • Involved the Romans, under the command of the Roman consuls, Publius Claudius Pulcher & Lucius Iunius Pullus.
  • They attacked the Carthaginian fleet, under the command of Adherbal, in the harbour of Drepanum (in modern Trapani, Sicily).
  • The Roman command was severely defeated with a loss of 93 of their 123 vessels.
  • Publius Claudius Pulcher is fined 120,000 asses as punishment for the defeat.
  • Lucius Iunius Pullus commits suicide following the shame of defeat.
Post Battle of Drepana:
  • Aulus Atilius Calatinus is elected dictator.
  • Aulus Atilius Calatinus leads an army into Sicily, becoming the first dictator to lead a Roman army outside Italy.
